fritzl wives

Before feminism in the 1960s it was pretty well accepted that men ruled the roost and when Patrice heard about the horrific Josef Fritzl story she immediately understood the type of man he was -- she was once married to one. Like the Stepford Wives, is there something about the Fritzl Wives?

“What I don't understand was why Rosemarie remained his wife after 1967 when he was imprisoned for rape, and after 1984 when her children had grown up,” says Patrice. “And I don’t understand, either, why poor Elisabeth, the daughter, did not tell anyone her father was raping her from the age of 11.”

“He was the perpetrator, but Rosemarie the wife was the enabler,” adds Patrice. “Without her enablement, he would be just a pathetic little man with unfulfilled fantasies and deep down in her psyche she knows this to be true.”

“Marriage gave Rosemarie the social status and comfortable life she prized and as long as he left her alone, got his rocks off somewhere else and kept the money flowing she was apparently willing to ignore the many glaring inconsistencies that his double life necessitated.”

"Rosemarie's presence in the house gave him a cover of respectability as well as freedom from chores, totally enabling him to act out his fantasies," explains Patrice. "By deciding to stay with him when she was 100% free to leave in 1984, and by acting as a surrogate mother for three of the cellar children -- the first brought up in 1992, eight years later -- she actually provided all of the means necessary for him to get away with his terrible crime."

“She was using him as much as he was using her -- it was a marriage of mutual convenience,” says Patrice. “My marriage was ‘convenient’, too, but I took the first opportunity I could, in 1984, to break free from the Stepford wife existence.”
